Many people wonder what to do with Irish Moss when they get it! It's actually quite simple, and once you're used to the required preparation, it's quick, easy and fun!
Irish Moss is covered in large particles of salt and sand. This requires thorough rinsing to be used as food. You may start off by taking a handful of it, and:
1. Rinse very thoroughly, multiple times, in cool filtered water, until the gritty salt and sand texture has been replaced by the smooth, slippery texture of the wet Irish Moss
2. Place your rinsed Irish Moss into a bowl (no more than 3/4 full, as it will soak up water and grow!) and cover with pure water
3. Let it soak for about 24 hours before using
4. Now it's done, and ready to be used in recipes! Soaked, whole Irish Moss can be stored in your fridge (still in its soak water) for a week or longer, so you can use it a little bit at a time.
5. Most recipes will call for Irish Moss in ounce weight measurements. This means the pre-soaked moss. See the recipe below for an example!
Now that you have all this Irish Moss soaked, what else can you do with it? There are many gourmet-tasting recipes that are lots of fun (many of them actually quite simple), and it's also an excellent addition to your daily fruit or superfood smoothies! It will give your smoothie more "body" and a big load of minerals!
